Notes on STRTODLT.PRG by Jim Kent at Dancing Flame, San Francisco.
I. What is it?
This utility converts an Aegis Animator ST .SCR file to a .DLT file
for use with Cyber Paint and Cybermate. The DLT file will generally be
much larger but will replay smoother (at 30 frames/sec). In a sense this
is the "Aegis Animator Compiler" some of you've been asking for.
(Especially in that .DLT files can be further converted into more
compact .SEQ files in Cyber Paint, and both .SEQ and .DLT files
can be played with the Public Domain ANIMATE3.PRG program on the
Cyber Paint disk.)
II. How do I use it?
Set your color ST to low-res and double-click on STRTODLT.PRG. After you
click on the "this is SCRtoDLT version xxx" box, you'll see the
GEM file requestor. Select the .SCR file you wish to convert.
It will take a while to load. When it finishes loading, it will play
through the animation once and then ask you if you want to save it as
a .DLT. You can click the right mouse button while it's playing if
you don't need to view the whole animation. If you do decide to save
it as a .DLT you'll get another file requestor for the DLT name. Just
click on OK unless you want to name it something different. Then
SCRTODLT will go save the animation a frame at a time to a DLT file.
If you don't quite have room on your floppy it will save what it can
and give you a file truncated message.
SCRTODLT is not very flexible about timing but the Aegis Animator
is. If you don't want 30 frames/sec then adjust the timing of the file
(global speed) in the time menu. Double the Aegis Animator speed to
get 15 frames/sec.
III. Is it free?
Yes. Both Antic and Aegis have been given the rights to distribute
this specific utility in the Public Domain (the same as with
ANIMATE3.PRG, also on this disk). That means that you also have
the right to give SCRTODLT.PRG to a friend of yours who you know
has Aegis Animator ST and would like to start experimenting with
DLT files. CYBER PAINT, however, is a fully-copyrighted work.
IV. Other Things Worth Knowing
Please make sure you've got plenty of free disk space before starting
this. DLT files get big. Wish I had time to make it save the in the more
compact SEQ format, but alas my deadline is tomorrow.
Also, DLT files don't carry color information except for the first frame.
Your Aegis Animator color cycling will be lost.
FYI, .DLT files need a .PI1 file for the first frame. Don't worry,
I take care of creating it, but if you're copying to another floppy or
directory don't forget to take the .PI1 with the .DLT.
